Pauline Stephens McAlpin
SAVANNAH - Pauline Stephens McAlpin of Savannah, GA passed away on Monday, March 12, 2012 at age 99. She was predeceased by Aaron Champion McAlpin, Jr., her loving and devoted husband of 52 years. She is survived by her brother in law, Kirk Martin McAlpin, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand- nieces and grand-nephews.
Pauline graduated from the University of Georgia. Shortly afterwards, she entered into a rewarding vocation as an educator. Many in Savannah still remember her as their "fair yet demanding" Latin and Algebra teacher at Savannah High School. She retired after 30 years of dedicated service with the Chatham County Board of Education. Pauline and her late husband were devoted members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Pauline's family is greatly appreciative of the loving care provided by the entire staff at Buckingham South and later with Hospice of Savannah.
There will be a graveside service at Laurel Grove Cemetery on a later date to be determined.

I will always remember Mrs. McAlpin with fondness. She was a wonderful and dedicated teacher. During the time Mrs. McAlpin taught at Savannah High, we were fortunate to have several excellent teachers there. Mrs. McAlpin was definitely one of the best. Bruce Barragan, Class of 1964

Mrs. McAlpin is one of my fondest memories of my years at Savannah High School. She was a wonderful, caring person with infinite patience for those of us who happened to be a little slow on the uptake. Always encouraging and available, she made life in those developing years much more pleasant and rewarding. RIP, sweet lady.
- Thomas Murphy, Milledgeville, GA
I fondly remember Mrs. McAlpin, one of the best teachers I had at Savannah High School. Her expectations were clear and high. We once asked her why she chose to teach Algebra and Latin to which she answered, 'I guess I prefer precision.' She was daunting, but inspiring.
- Marie Hayes, Fairfield, CT
I had Mrs. McAlpin for Latin II when I was in the tenth grade at Savannah High School 1966-67. The phrase 'fair yet demanding' describes her perfectly. She was a wonderful teacher.
- Marvin Grimm, Decatur, AL

Mrs. McAlpin was the epitome of grace under fire. Our antics in HR, and Latin, phased her not. She was a true educator whose dedication and high expectations were greatly respected. I can only hope that my students will one day remember me with similar regard. Best wishes to the family. Sissy G Hoffman SHS Class of 1969
